Los Angeles, Feb 1: Two students were shot in a classroom in Salvador Castro Middle School in Westlake, west of Downtown Los Angeles on Thursday morning, and one is in critical condition, police said.
The incident happened about 8:55 a.m., said LAPD Officer Drake Madison.
According to The Los Angeles Times, the victims are a 15-year-old male, who is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head, and a 15-year-old female, who was shot in the wrist and is listed in fair condition.
Three other individuals also suffered minor injuries, according to Capt. Erik Scott, with the Los Angeles Fire Department. Their ages range from 11 to 30. Scott described their injuries as minor abrasions. A girl was detained and is believed to be the shooter, said LAPD Officer Meghan Aguilar. A firearm has been recovered, she said.
The school has been deemed safe but remains on lockdown. A parent of one of the shooting victims had been notified and the other was in the process of being notified, said Los Angeles School Police Chief Steve Zipperman.
