The exponential growth of online media controlled and operated by the diaspora Nepalese in the United States and across the globe has raised some pertinent concerns among the media community members themselves about the quality of the content publicized on the Web. While the accessibility of information is a positive development in itself, unrestricted and unlimited flow of substandard, biased, and subjective information online does, no doubt, do more harm than good. It has been realized lately that the Nepalese diaspora needs news media that can circulate impartial, truthful, and factual information without fear of retaliation from sponsors of the content they are bound to cover for survival or for unjustified financial gains. The mission of durbinnepal.com is to alter the current trajectory of information dissemination of diaspora Nepali media by sticking to professionalism and quality and to bring positive changes in the community.
The migration of the Nepalese to different countries of the world for better life and opportunities has seen a dramatic rise in the recent years and will continue to rise in the decades to come, if not the centuries. Although it is hard to authenticate data on the number of Nepalese immigrants in the United States, around 300,000 people are believed to have immigrated in the last two decades, excluding the Bhutanese, Burmese, and Indians of the Nepali heritage. Nepali people have migrated everywhere in search of better education and employment opportunities, but America, Canada, Australia, and some European countries, especially English-speaking countries, have been our preferred destinations.
Our folks have settled permanently in these countries because of the English language background. The need for a reliable and professional news media to cover the issues that matter to the diaspora Nepalese is equally on the rise, and durbinnepal.com intends to fill this gap; the English edition of durbinnepal.com aims to connect the second generation immigrants with Nepal and Nepali culture by providing content in the language they are used to interacting in. Durbinnepal.com is a collective outcome of seasoned and like-minded journalists who had worked, or have still been working, in well-established media houses in Nepal as reporters, correspondents, copy editors, editors, or columnists. Our goal is to disseminate information and opinion that matter to the Nepalese people around the world and create a well-informed and competent society; we promise to strive to empower our society through the power of information that is true and impartial because we do not belong to any particular political, racial, cultural, or economic interest groups. We do not have any vested interest in launching this news media and will not support any individuals, groups, or “community” organizations that have vested interest. Our focus will be to sow the seeds of professionalism in diaspora journalism by sticking to professional ethics and journalistic codes of conduct.
We will not be frightened to expose the unlawful and unethical activities of individuals or organizations who claim to serve our communities in different parts of the world but exploit hardworking diaspora members; we will support, encourage, and promote any initiative and action that can positively impact our folks, and our team is professionally equipped to take that challenge.
