Los Angeles, January 21: Democratic party’s rising star and California Senator Kamala Harris has announced to run for president in 2020. Harris, 54, grew up in a biracial family—her mother was an Indian immigrant from Madras and her father came as an international student from Jamaica.
“I love my country, and this is a moment in time that I feel a sense of responsibility to fight for the best of who we are,” Harris said on ABC’s Good Morning America on Monday.
Kamala, who was elected a US Senator from California in 2016, also served as California State’s Attorney General for two terms after being elected first in 2010. Harris’s background as the second black woman senator and first South Asian-American senator is likely to put her in a strong position among the democratic voters. Harris is the fourth politician to jump into the presidential race. New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro have already announced their candidacy.
On her Facebook page, Harris has announced to hold her first campaign rally next week in Oakland City, California.
