Los Angeles, August 8: The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials arrested about 680 undocumented immigrants in early-morning workplace raids at several food-processing plants in Mississippi on Wednesday, authorities said.
According to an ICE statement, the coordinated raids were conducted at seven agricultural processing plants across Mississippi. Over 600 Homeland Security officials were involved in the raids. This is believed to be the largest single immigration operation carried out in the United States.
The ICE agents surrounded the targeted plants to prevent workers, mainly Latino immigrants, from escaping, The Associated Press report said. The agents also seized company business records for further actions.
ICE acting director Matthew Albence said the raids were the result of a year-long investigation. This latest ICE action has spread fear and anxiety among the immigrant communities, including the Nepalese community in the US. The administration has taken a very tough stance on immigrants ever since President Donald J. Trump took office.
